我心目中的時代眼淚：Dreamcast

要說心目中的時代眼淚，這一顆殞落的巨星，死得不明不白的英雄，Dreamcast的遭遇
就宛如西楚霸王項羽的殞落一般，Dreamcast比SONY的PlayStation 2早十五個月上市，
也比微軟的Xbox和任天堂的GameCube早三年，但最終也未能打敗PlayStation 2，說到
DC（DreamCast），馬上就會想到橘色的螺琁、白色的小便當盒，首部搭載Modem可以線
上對戰，也是SEGA公司最後的主機，退出主機衰落的證明。Dreamcast繼續用了日立
Super H系列的128 BIT RISC CPU，200MHz，運算速度是Sega Saturn的七倍！浮點運算
能力：14G，是P2的五倍！GPU使用了NEC Power VR2，這系列的GPU常見於現在的智慧型
手機。然而在強大的硬體性能曝光後，Sony隨即宣佈PS2相關資訊，並提早公開展示畫
面，使得觀望中的玩家放棄DC，PS2擁有DC所沒有的DVD播放能力，SEGA說來也悲情，出
了那麼多主機，從來沒有當過老大，前面被任天堂打壓，後來被SONY欺負，唯一一次好
像要和MS聯手，結果MS還是背棄了SEGA，自己出了XBOX。

Dreamcast缺乏RPG大作，使已在PlayStation上玩慣RPG的眾多玩家的缺乏轉移到
Dreamcast上的動機。而Dreamcast主力遊戲《音速小子》偏偏又在主機供應量不足時對
上了Square的曠世名作《最終幻想VIII》（Final Fantasy Ⅷ），使得銷量不如預期，
連帶地讓SEGA希望由遊戲拉抬主機的願望也落空了。
Dreamcast不能向下相容SEGA Saturn的遊戲，而Playstation 2能向下相容PlayStation
的遊戲。
因製造成本問題，Dreamcast使用的儲存媒介規格是Yamaha（山葉）開發的GD-ROM而非
當時極為昂貴的DVD-ROM。但DVD-ROM在Dreamcast推出後一、兩年內日漸普及，而
PlayStation 2採用的儲存媒介規格正是DVD-ROM，使Dreamcast在儲存媒介的規格上失
去與PlayStation 2競爭的力量。
本來Dreamcast使用GD-ROM是防止盜版的出現，但後來破解組織發現原來GD-ROM只是高
密度的CD-ROM。最後破解組織破解GD-ROM防拷保護及利用Dreamcast可以閱讀CD-ROM的
漏洞和寬頻上網器（Broadband Adapter）讀取遊戲資料，大量盜版遊戲充斥市場，影
響SEGA的獲利。但另一方面，也由於盜版的出現，使得臺灣、香港、中國等地的
Dreamcast主機銷售量有明顯的提升。
Dreamcast銷售點過少。SEGA只將Dreamcast的存貨分發給全日本約5000間的特約商號，
並要求消費者先要在這些商號辦理訂購手續。
Dreamcast沒有足夠份量的遊戲支援。Dreamcast一開始在美國的主機銷量高於Nintendo
64；但在《神奇寶貝》金╱銀版於Nintendo 64發售時登場的時候，情況卻急轉直下，
最後導致SEGA失去美國市場。
Sony見到Dreamcast的強大運算能力後，不得不立刻宣布將推出PlayStation 2，並提早
公開PlayStation 2的展示畫面。雖然PlayStation 2初期的遊戲未能達到展示畫面的水
準，但Sony引起話題的目的已達到了：玩家因為期待PlayStation 2的上市而放棄購買
Dreamcast，最後迫使SEGA停產Dreamcast主機並裁撤遊戲機生產線。


末代主機的背影，總是格外的悽慘，結束了DC短暫而叱吒風雲的一生。
